Two people receiving the same amount of sunlight under the same environment, one person may get Freckles and the other may not or both get Freckles but with different degrees of darkness. Therefore, the development of freckles are thought to be a mixed result of inheritance and sun exposure. Both natural sunlight and artificial suntanning lights emit ultraviolet (UV) rays which cause the outer layer of the skin thicken and the pigment-producing cells to produce the pigment melanin at an increased rate. This process may cause unusually heavy deposit of melanin at one spot in the skin and become a freckle. |
